Advent is thus a period for devout and joyful experience (LY 39).

Advent Wreath:
Originates from the tradition of northern Europe where in the deep of winter, people lit candles on wheel-shaped bundles of evergreen. Evergreen & circular shape symbolizes on-going life. Candlelight represents looking forward to the longer days of Spring. 3 purple candles: Week 1 (Hope), Week 2 (Preparation), Week 4 (Love). Pink candle at Week 3 (Joy). Sometimes white candle is placed at the centre of the wreath at Christmas Day, associated with
angels and the birth of Jesus.

20th Anniversary of the Kota Kinabalu Archdiocesan Vision & Mission:

16 Sept, 2017 marks the 20th Anniversary of our Archdiocesan Vision and Mission, a pastoral direction for our Local Church. This Vision & Mission are part of the Diocesan Organisational Pastoral Plan (DOPP) which was launched on this date in 1997. Our Vision (front of the church bulletin) speaks of the ideal Church that we want to become. Our Mission (Archdiocesan Prayer on page 2 of the church bulletin) speaks of the steps that we are to take to achieve the Vision. Let us continue to work together to build our Local Church to achieve this Vision, a gift of God given to us, that we may continue the works of Christ.

Archdiocese of Kota Kinabalu:

What is a Vision? A statement of the overall, continuing end to be accomplished and for which all available resources will be used. It establishes the reason for an organization (church) and its parts to exist (DOPP no. 4.1).
Vision of the Archdiocese: A caring communion of Christ-centred communities journeying together in faith, hope and love, empowered by the Holy Spirit in the evangelizing mission of building the Kingdom of God.

What is a Mission? Is the critical factor that will provide guidance in committing the available resources of an organization (church). For the Archdiocese to move towards the vision, every member of the Archdiocesan family must accept to live according to certain values. These are expressed in a statement known as purpose commitment or the mission of all Catholics in the Archdiocese (DOPP no. 4.2).

Mission of the Archdiocese: We, the family of God comprising laity, religious, priests and bishop of the Archdiocese of Kota Kinabalu, in union with the Spirit of Christ, commit ourselves to:
an on-going personal and communal renewal;
a life of prayer nourished by the sacraments;
living the Word of God, guided by the teachings of the Church;
unity in communities, respecting the values of the other faiths;
responsible stewardship of the environment, as well as;
promotion of justice and peace.

Father’s Day Blessing Prayer - 18th June, 2017:

Almighty God and Father, in your wisdom and love you made all things. Thank you for being our Father, you who care and love us so much that you send us your only Son Jesus Christ, who came to show and bring us your love. Bless all fathers everywhere, and all who have been like a father to us, that they may be strengthened as Christian fathers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. May their children honour them with a spirit of profound respect. We also pray for fathers facing difficult times. May they have the comfort of knowing that your love for them is unconditional, your care for them is constant, your presence with them is never-ending. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.

World Communications Day (WCD):

WCD is an annual commemoration by the Church which was mandated by the Vatican Council II, and is celebrated throughout the world on the Sunday before Pentecost. This is the 51st year (since 1967) that WCD is being celebrated.
The aims of WCD are to:
1. Inform Catholics of their responsibilities in communication and media consumption
2. Pray for the holistic development of communications and media so that the two aims of social communication – unity and development – are properly met;
3. Urge Catholics to contribute funds to the cause of social communication.
WCD is also celebrated to:
1. Highlight the role and vital importance of communication and media in the Church;
2. Recognise the vital contribution of those involved in communication and media;
3. Pray that professionals involved in communication and media integrate Gospel values into their work;
4. Provide pastoral care and support to those engaged in the important work of communication and media.
All collections this weekend will be sent to the Archdiocese for the running Catholic Sabah. Thank you for your generous contribution.

What is Easter?

Also called Pascha, is the feast of Christ's resurrection from the dead. It is celebrated on the Sunday following Holy Week. Easter is not just a day, but an entire fifty day season, called Eastertide, marked by joyful festivities and liturgical fullness. You might hear "Christ is Risen!" and "Alleluia!" frequently during the Easter season, because we are joyfully celebrating Christ's bodily resurrection. The 50-day season of Easter runs up to the Feast of Pentecost (4th June, 2017).

THE EASTER TRIDUUM:

Comes from a Latin word meaning “three days.” Begins with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper in the evening of Holy Thursday, reaches its high point in the Easter Vigil & ends with evening prayers on Easter Sunday. The solemn liturgies of the Triduum are the most important liturgies of the Church year. These liturgies teach us the meaning of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. During these 3 days, we come together as the people of God to remember the saving act of Jesus, the miracle of His resurrection – and to celebrate our faith and identity as Christians. Catholics are to attend ALL celebrations from Holy Thurs to Easter Sunday because it is ONE Easter celebration.

Points of Reflection and Action on the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy by Pope Francis Francis Part 2:

Church as agents of mercy: To be capable of mercy, we must therefore first of all dispose ourselves to listen to the Word of God. This means rediscovering the value of silence in order to meditate on the Word that comes to you. In this way, it will be possible to contemplate God’s mercy and adopt it as our lifestyle. (Misericordiae Vultus, no.13).

Pilgrimage: represents the journey each of us makes in this life. This will be a sign that mercy is also a goal to reach and requires dedication and sacrifice. May pilgrimage be an impetus to conversion by crossing the Holy Door (MV, 14). Passing through this Holy Door of Mercy means: (a) freedom to choose Jesus & leave our sins behind; (b) professing that Jesus Christ is Lord.

The Lord Jesus shows us the steps of the pilgrimage to attain our goal: “Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemned not, and you will not be condemned; Forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you; good measures, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back” (Luke 6:37-38).

Our personal pilgrimage:

To refrain from judgement & condemnation, means to know how to accept the good in every person and to spare him/her any suffering caused by our partial judgement and presumption;

2. But this is still not sufficient to express mercy. Jesus asks us to forgive and to give. To be instruments of mercy because it was we who first received mercy from God. To be generous with others, knowing that God showers his goodness upon us.

When: Sunday 11th September, 2016 Time: 7:00am - 4:00pm Where: Sacred Heart Cathedral, Kota Kinabalu. Bazaar coupons: Available from the Sisters or on the day of the Bazaar at the Cathedral.

Points of Reflection and Action on the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy by Pope Francis:

Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy. Whoever sees Jesus, sees the Father (John 14:9). Jesus of Nazareth, by his words, his actions, and his entire person (Dei Verbum, no.4) reveals the mercy of God (Misericordiae Vultus, no.1).

The mission Jesus received from the Father was that of revealing the mystery of divine love in its fullness, “God is love” (1 John 4:8, 16). This love is made visible and tangible in Jesus’ entire life. The signs he works for sinners, the poor, the marginalised, the sick & the suffering, are meant to teach mercy (MV, no.8).

What moved Jesus in many of his ministries is mercy, where he reads the hearts of the people and responded to their deepest needs. Through this, Jesus reveals the nature of God as a Father who never gives up until he has forgiven the wrong and overcome rejection with compassion and mercy.
We are called to show mercy because mercy has first been shown to us.

Pardoning offences becomes the clearest expression of merciful love, and for us Christians it is an imperative from which we cannot excuse ourselves.

As the Father loves, so do his children. Just as he is merciful, so we are called to be merciful to each other (MV, no. 9).

Personal reflection questions:
1. Am I able to love my spouse and children whole heartedly, being patient and merciful to them?
2. Am I able to pardon those who have wronged or hurt me?
3. Do I have unresolved anger in me, done violence in words and deeds, and being revengeful? What can I begin to do to let these go that I may live more joyfully in the peace, love and mercy of God?

Mercy is the foundation of the Church ’s life. All of her pastoral activity should be caught up in the tenderness she makes present to believers. (MV, no. 10)
The Church’s very credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and compassionate love. The Church “has an endless desire to show mercy” (Evangelii Gaudium, no. 24). The Church is commissioned to announce the mercy of God, the beating heart of the Gospel. Her language and her gestures must transmit mercy, so as to touch the hearts of all people and inspire them once more to find the road that leads to the Father. (MV, no. 12).

Reflection question: Personally, have I shown mercy and compassion to others through my language and gestures, that have touched and inspired them to go back to the Father? (To be continued…)

Parish Men’s Faith Formation.

Why? We only need to look around us to know that we are a nation suffering from the crisis of being men. Many men seek fulfilment in created things. Our faith urges us to rise up and find significance and fulfillment in God as He leads us to live our truer-selves. We would like to respond to this cry by reflecting on some fundamental truths that will lead us away from disillusionment, depression or numbness into God’s glorious light. Objective: Leading men to be a witness of God’s love, and of the transformation that takes place within their hearts because of His mercy. When: Saturday 6th Aug, 2016 Time: 8:00am - 5:30pm Where: Stella Maris Parish Hall Fee: RM15/pax (lunch) Speakers: Bro. What happened at Pentecost? 50 days after the Resurrection at Pentecost the glorified Jesus Christ poured out the Spirit in abundance and revealed him as a divine Person so that the Holy Trinity was fully manifest. The mission of Christ and of the Spirit became the mission of the Church which is sent to proclaim and spread the mystery of the communion of the Holy Trinity.
What does the Spirit do in the Church? The Spirit builds, animated and sanctifies the Church. As the Spirit of Love, he restores to the baptized the divine likeness that was lost through sin and causes them to live in Christ the very life of the Holy Trinity. He sends them forth to bear witness to the Truth of Christ and he organizes them in their respective functions so that all might bear “the fruit of the Spirit” (Galatians 5:22) .

THE EASTER TRIDUUM:

Lent exists so that we can prepare ourselves for the Easter Triduum. Triduum comes from a Latin word meaning “three days.” It begins with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper in the evening of Holy Thursday, reaches its high point in the Easter Vigil and ends with evening prayers on Easter Sunday. The solemn liturgies of the Triduum are the most important liturgies of the Church year. These liturgies teach us the meaning of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. The richness of the symbols and rituals help us to experience the mysteries of Jesus’ final hours, His passion, suffering and His rising from the dead. In a special way, during these three days, we come together as the people of God to remember the saving act of Jesus, the miracle of His resurrection – and to celebrate our faith and identity as Christians. Because Christ was willing to die for our sins and was raised from the dead, death is no longer the end of life for us. It is the beginning of a NEW LIFE in Him. Catholics are to attend ALL celebrations from Holy Thurs to Easter Sunday.

Christmas Season:

After the annual celebration of the paschal mystery, there is no more ancient
feast day for the Church than the recalling of the memory of the Nativity of
the Lord and of the mysteries of his first appearing. This is the object of the
Christmas season (General Norms for the Liturgical Year and the Calendar (Roman Missal) no. 32).

Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy:

We are convinced that the path of Mercy on which Pope Francis has placed the Church in this journey of the Jubilee will be a moment of true grace for all Christians and a re-awakening to the path of the new evangelization and the
pastoral conversion the Pope has
indicated. As Pope Francis wrote: “May she (the Church) never tire of extending mercy, and be ever patient in offering compassion and comfort. May the Church become the voice of every man and woman, and repeat confidently without end: ’Be mindful of your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love, for they have been from of old’” (MV, 25).

Msgr. Primus Jouil, Rev. Fr. Tony Mojiwat, Religious Sisters and Brothers,
Pastoral and Finance Councils, and All parish communities, groups & ministries wish all parishioners.

A BLESSED CHRISTMAS 2015 AND SPIRIT-FILLED NEW YEAR 2016.
MAY THIS NEW YEAR THAT COINCIDES WITH THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH
“EXTRAORDINARY JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY” BRINGS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY INTO DEEPER RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS CHRIST, AND THUS BE FILLED WITH HIS MERCY, PEACE, LOVE AND JOY
.
